Dwarka is built on the bank of Gamut creek. Dwarka is also known as the city of gold. It is believed that Sri Krishna came here from Mathura along with Yadav families and established his own empire.
In the 7th century Shankaracharya established four great monasteries in the cardinal directions, one in the west is in Dwarka. Also Mira Bai lived the final years of her life in Dwarka practicing Bhakti Yoga, and here wrote to Krishna her immortal poems of love.
Archaeological excavations indicate that the present day Dwarka is the 6th city on built on this site. The earlier five have been submerged in the sea. The 5-storey Jaganath Temple temple is supported by 60 columns and is crowned by a soaring, elaborately carved spire.
